Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and turned it into a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this lovable family go about their everyday routines.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
