While Michel Illouz slowly made his way through the throngs beneath the tall evergreens and date palms at the burial ground in Ra'anana, a urban center located approximately 20 kilometers north of Tel Aviv, he showed appreciation to countless visitors as feasible.
Previously he offered an invitation to the nation's citizens to join his family in mourning his young adult son, Guy, whose body had been repatriated from Gaza on Monday.
Overwhelming Response
Countless individuals heeded the call. They lined the streets, accompanied the funeral vehicle carrying his mortal coil, and gathered at the cemetery in such significant numbers that the initial arrangement to conduct the memorial indoors had to be abandoned.
Rather, the gathering was conducted outside, accompanied by the melody of singing birds.
Notable Occasion
This represented the opening memorial service since the remaining two dozen captives came back from Gaza, accompanied by several deceased individuals. A further 21 of the deceased hostages remain missing, but at minimum this household now had a designated location to mourn and remember their son, per close acquaintances.
Tragic Story
Guy Illouz, a musician and sound technician, had been struck from behind at the Nova music festival during the Hamas assault on October 7, 2023. Before the tragedy unfolded, he had called his father from a hiding place to tell him he cared; to bid farewell. He was captured, and per those held with him, he eventually succumbed from his trauma due to medical neglect.
Loved One's Insight
A family friend of the Illouz family, Michelle, aged 50, stated that it had been vitally significant to them that people attended today. The Illouz family members, including Guy's female relatives and male sibling, had practiced the mourning period, the extended period of grieving, after learning of his passing in December of the previous year. But now that Guy was finally back with them, they needed "supportive individuals again."
"It warms my heart that you attended," expressed Michel. "Your presence is deeply appreciated."
Dad's Eulogy
He addressed his son. "My dear Guy," he said, using a loving expression, "it's hard for me to envision the days ahead without you. They took you from me – they murdered you – they captured my essence and stole my identity and murdered my soul and feelings."
"I've been left hollow since that pointless violence by those vicious attackers when they caught you and told you to turn around, and then just discharged two needless bullets into your dorsal area."
Ultimate Parting
"Thus I stood this morning, heading toward Abu Kabir medical examiner's office to verify your remains and part ways. They removed the white sheet, and the initial sight I observed was that smile of yours, that hopeful nature, that calm demeanor and grace that so characterized you."
"I made contact, tried to smell you, gently felt each part in your body. I observed you, I was by myself with you, and yes, I felt with total assurance that it was you. Yes, I know, Guy-shuk, that you've returned to us. You've rejoined your relatives' care, to all your close associates, and to the countless people whose feelings your experience touched."
Parental Resilience
Throughout the early part of the service, Illouz had dedicated all his efforts on comforting his younger children. He stroked the hair of his female children, embraced his boy, showed affection and composed himself for them. But then his emotions surfaced.
Cherished Memories
"I will yearn for so much journeying together through this nation, sensing your presence, hearing your music, relaxing in mountainous areas and igniting the flame to make coffee the way only you knew how – 'Dad, do you see the coffee bubbles? You have to simmer it carefully, let the foam rise, then heat it once more. Agitate the liquid with spinning actions' – and then your grin while sipping the coffee and your pleasure in every particular taste."
"Prior to my departure Abu Kabir today, I honored my word. I observed you, inhaled your essence one last time, and yes, I bestowed affection on the front of your head. I was could perceive your handsomeness even in the state in which you came back."
Closing Statement
"Beloved child, I adore you completely, I love you. I will long for you every instant and tiny segment of my life. Rest now, my beloved son, rest after a passage of two years through unexplored dimensions to us. I love you, my Guy-shuk, my beloved firstborn son."
