Fans Are Being Granted a Fresh Title in the Finest Star Wars Series in History, Led by a Mass Effect Trilogy Veteran.

The galaxy far, far away enthusiasts have no shortage of titles when it comes to great video games showcasing the iconic energy blades, but the universe created by George Lucas is more than a battleground for fighting. Rarely have games have understood this as well as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was developed in the old-school computer role-playing game tradition that made developers like Obsidian and BioWare legendary. Now, after multiple fits and starts, The Game Awards has revealed that the community will soon be able to dive into a spiritual successor to the series. It's called Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.

The Big Reveal

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is labeled "an upcoming single-player narrative-driven action RPG and successor in spirit to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic." Veteran developer Casey Hudson, previously at BioWare and the game director of the original KOTOR, is at the helm at Arcanaut Studios.

“When we developed the original KOTOR, we wanted to build a ultimate Star Wars experience — shaping an adventure that was made of all the things we longed to doing as Star Wars fans,” Hudson stated. “Now, 25 years after we started work on that game, our ambitions are just as ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic presents an opportunity to investigate a modern vision of a definitive Star Wars experience, using advanced technology and game design, and an brand-new story written specifically to realize the blend of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the heart of KOTOR.”

A Welcome Surprise

The announcement is somewhat of a surprise, given that 2022 saw a contemporary effort at an Old Republic game get shelved. However, rumors had suggested that a reimagining of KotOR, as well as one of its follow-up, had been under development as recently as March 2025.

Here is the synopsis for the new title:

Developed by Arcanaut Studios in conjunction with Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Led by Casey Hudson, Game director of the original Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, the team of veteran game developers and storytellers at Arcanaut Studios is crafting an epic interactive adventure across a galaxy on the brink of rebirth where every decision shapes your path towards light or darkness. Fate is in your hands.

Why KOTOR Matters

The venerated role-playing games, which have seen recent ports to platforms like the Switch, are known for their dialogue-heavy, decision-based, and character-sheet-deep approach to Star Wars. The games were influential enough that they inadvertently codified how people imagine the Old Republic time period as a whole, still today. The games ventured to question many beliefs of Jedi lore that are often seen as inarguable, like whether the faction and its understanding of the Force are correct. The second game, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, went in a far more grim direction by asking if the world might not be wiser without the Jedi at all. Both games are venerated by fans years after their release, but the follow-up in particular is argued to be as one of the greatest pieces of Star Wars media in existence.

A New Hope

And now, four years after receiving a cinematic trailer for a Knights of the Old Republic remake, the community is at last being granted another game in the same vein. Given the demand for rich games like Baldur's Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin, a new take on Knights of the Old Republic that's executed properly has the possibility to be incredibly popular.
