FIFA World Cup Leaves an Injury Trail Which Is Harming Football. Will Anybody Listen?

C. Palmer and O. Dembélé's photographs atop the famous observation deck before the expanded FIFA tournament championship match looked impressive, but it isn't wise to suggest that the two could have benefited more from seasonal rest than play.

Elite athletes struggling with fitness issues was foreseeable before FIFA's enlarged competition began. Jürgen Klopp called it “The poorest idea ever,” citing worries over long-term impacts of cramming more matches into an increasingly packed schedule. Klopp stated, “Previously it was the Copa América and the European Championship, this year it’s the global club event, soon it’s the global tournament. This implies insufficient rest for the participants taking part.”

UEFA allowing league matches overseas represents a disappointing turning point, concluding soccer as we have known it.

It was far from the most extreme of forecasts. The fixture list was already stretched due to congestion from the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2022's global championship taking place in winter, and the Champions League growing in size. The global players' union has consistently warned about increasing injuries and player burnout. Yet, the reaction has been to introduce more football. Authorities do not take participants and coaches seriously. The danger is that the top talent have nothing left to give when the World Cup – enlarged to forty-eight sides for the first time – takes place in North America, Mexico, and the United States soon.

Cole Palmer Example: An Elite Player Pushed Too Far

The Chelsea forward is the obvious illustration. The 23-year-old was the inspiration for his club at the global tournament, destroying Dembélé's French giants in the final, but he has barely been seen this season. The suspicion is that he has competed excessively. He has been plagued by a groin issue for a twelve months and, while there is no sign that the attacker requires an operation, it is hard not to feel that he is, as Arsène Wenger used to say of J. Wilshere, in the danger area.

This could be a major concern. A London club or national team match without their star is a diminished event. He is an exceptional player, but everyone has bodily limits. It is absurd that Palmer has gone three consecutive off-seasons without a proper break. He helped England youth team to claim the European championship in 2023, was prominent when the first team reached the Euro 2024 final, and was still playing for Chelsea until the middle of the summer last season.

When Is It Too Much?

The attacker played fifty-seven matches for club and country in the previous season, his first complete season as an regular international and English top-flight star. He skipped the group stage of the Conference League last season but was participating in the elimination rounds and was man of the match when Chelsea defeated the Spanish side in the final at the close of May. The Paris Saint-Germain game was Palmer 55th of the term. He had also represented England in their World Cup qualifier against Andorra at the start of June.

So, do not be surprised that Palmer has been absent for a large number of matches currently. His is a longstanding issue, but it surely might have been addressed if he had been allowed a holiday last summer. This is not a controversial point. Chelsea received no special treatment; they had a shortened, two-week pre-season. The Paris game was on July 13, and Palmer started when a tired, undercooked Chelsea started the season by drawing nil-nil with the London rivals on 17 August.

Spanish giants Madrid’s T. Alexander-Arnold is out with a torn thigh muscle after participating in the global event after a draining campaign for Liverpool.

Chelsea manager Maresca was at a loss to foresee how the additional fixture load and absence of preparation time would affect his squad. Currently, though, it is clear that Chelsea are facing difficulties. Levi Colwill tore an ACL on the opening day of summer training. Liam Delap ripped a muscle against Fulham, Dario Essugo has had an operation on a thigh issue. Tosin Adarabioyo and Andrey Santos are injured. Moisés Caicedo, E. Fernandez, and Joao Pedro are competing through the discomfort.

Players' Union Findings and Club Responses

The union's yearly athlete fatigue report found that participants who competed in the tournament after completing a national competition campaign were among many at the top of the male game who did not have adequate summer breaks, hurting playing levels and raising the chance of physical issues. Last week the Chelsea boss commented in reference to the volume of fitness problems at Chelsea and Paris: “Probably it’s certain consequences from the Club World Cup.”

Will anyone heed these warnings? The Gunners' Noni Madueke, who departed Chelsea after the Club World Cup semi-final, is out for eight weeks with a joint problem. Paris Saint-Germain were missing their captain, Kvara Kvaratskhelia, Désiré Doue, and Dembélé when they beat the Spanish giants recently. Joao Neves and Fabian Ruiz have also had fitness problems. The French club were returning in play in the European showpiece on August 13. The show goes on.

Real Madrid's Injury Crisis

Additionally not on the stage at the present are Real Madrid's T. Alexander-Arnold and J. Bellingham. Alexander-Arnold came off a grueling championship campaign with his former side, signed for Madrid, played in their run to the last four of the Club World Cup, and is out with a torn muscle. T. Tuchel was saying in spring that Bellingham ought to have had an operation on a joint issue. The surgery was put off, however, with the pressures of the fixture list pushing another young talent to persevere and keep going.

The Reasons Deny the Proof?

Why disregard it? A few people have noticed that players who didn't participate in the competition have too had fitness issues. This is not an sufficient justification for the Club World Cup. Players will suffer injuries. Physical problems and tiredness have been on the rise. It still seems insufficient when authorities are forcing in additional matches, effectively risking the product they wish to market. The football, recall, is inferior if the best players are missing or worn out.
