Football star Earps Clarifies Her Memoir Was Not Written to Criticize Others

Goalkeeper Mary Earps has emphatically said that her recently published autobiography was never intended to “tear anyone down” and voiced unease that audience feedback has been “misinterpreted.”

Debated Statements and Supporters’ Disapproval

The ex-Lionesses player, who was instrumental in the Euro 2022 victory, faced backlash from followers and Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor after making remarks about ex-colleague Hannah Hampton and coach Sarina Wiegman.

In her autobiography, Earps wrote that she told Wiegman she was “supporting poor attitude” by reinstating Hampton to the Lionesses lineup after omitting her for being “unruly and inconsistent.”

“I’ve found it quite intense to see how parts were misrepresented,” Earps stated publicly.

Clarifying Her Purpose

Earps strongly emphasized that her book was not meant to hurt others.

  • “I’ve not written this book to damage reputations in any shape or form.”
  • “That is not who I am as a person.”
  • “This is real life. It has repercussions. It is not a show.”

She also discussed how the women’s game has evolved into a realm that has become “almost like performance,” where individual stories are picked apart for audience entertainment.

Connection to the Coach

Earps discussed losing the starting position as the first-choice keeper ahead of the tournament and how that strained her relationship with Wiegman.

She clarified it was “not a sudden deterioration” in their relationship—just a divergence in opinions—and she maintains respect for the coach.

“There were things that happened in the summer that I would have preferred to go another way,” Earps stated.

Personal Struggles

In her book, Earps shared details of the harassment she endured at during her education, describing it as a “particularly challenging” chapter to go back to because it revived old wounds.

  • “I failed to defend myself in those days.”
  • “I always believed that people were against me for the majority of my years.”
  • “I became accustomed to feel like people were indifferent.”

These emotions led to panic attacks, and Earps shared she faced challenges with physical appearance and turned to alcohol during the Covid pandemic to handle emotional difficulties.

Personal Life and Future Plans

Earps recently shared that she is in a relationship with a woman and shared her happiness about her connection with Kitty.

She also discussed her desire to be a mother and revealed she has frozen her eggs for future use.

“I deeply desire to be a mum and have a family,” Earps said. “I enjoy my football career, but I wish to have a child in the future.”

Earps characterized the fertility process as “overwhelming and personal” and advocated for more research tailored to players undergoing similar procedures.

During her remarks, Earps maintained that she has no feelings of remorse about her career or individual actions, highlighting that she always behaved honestly.
