New research reveals that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using such medications must be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural changes.
