Authorities mentioned they were unable to take off the eyes without harming the artwork.

A young person from the Land Down Under has appeared in court after allegedly defacing a large blue sculpture of a legendary being by applying googly eyes to it.

The 19-year-old, 19 years old, participated via phone at the local court in South Australia on Tuesday, facing with one count of damaging property.

In a statement at the time of the recent event, the municipal authorities explained that CCTV footage captured a person putting fake eyes on the artwork, which locals have nicknamed the “Blue Blob”.

The accused did not enter a plea and told the court she was ill, as reported by news outlets, with the magistrate recommending her to find a lawyer before her next court date in December.

Sculpture after eye removal
The affected sculpture following the stickers were removed.

The following day the reported event, the local mayor stated that restoration to the much-loved community sculpture would be expensive as the stickers could not be removed without damaging the sculpture.

“This wilful damage to a valued public artwork is unacceptable and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor remarked in September. “It is not harmless fun, it is pricey - it is also disappointing to those members of our society who have embraced Cast in Blue.”

She added the local government would pursue the “significant” restoration expenses from those responsible for the damage.

At the time the sculpture was first proposed, it drew mixed reactions from the local community due to its cost and design.

Priced at 136,000 Australian dollars (eighty-nine thousand US dollars; sixty-eight thousand pounds), the sculpture depicts a mythical megafauna, with the creators inspired by an prehistoric anteater-like marsupial found in local caves that was “huge, slow-moving, and intriguing”.
